The Magic School Bus Sound: Bringing Science to Life through Illustrations

As an illustrator, I've always been drawn to the whimsical world of children's books. But it wasn't until I stumbled upon a peculiar topic - cockroaches! - that I discovered my true calling as a writer and illustrator. My journey began when I became an illustrator after realizing that there was something missing in my artwork: humor.

Growing up, I was always fascinated by science and the natural world. In fact, it was my 6th-grade teacher who first encouraged me to express my creativity through art. She would let me stand in the back of the room and paint all day long! This early experience sparked a lifelong passion for drawing and storytelling.

As I grew older, I pursued my interest in art by attending Cooper Union and Pratt Institute, where I earned bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts. My background in advertising, opera scenery painting, and even teaching art in high school and college provided me with a unique perspective on the world of illustration.

However, it wasn't until I started writing science books that I discovered my true love for humor. In my books, including The Magic School Bus series, I aim to answer questions that kids might have about complex scientific concepts - like how scientists guess what dinosaurs were like? By asking these questions and providing humorous answers, I hope to inspire young readers to explore the world of science.

My path as a writer and illustrator wasn't always straightforward. After college, I worked as an elementary-school teacher, librarian, children's book editor, and writer before finally finding my niche in children's literature. It was during this time that I stumbled upon an article in the Wall Street Journal about cockroaches - an insect I had never written about before.

The idea sparked a series of research projects, which eventually led me to write my first nonfiction book for children about these tiny creatures. Since then, I've written both fiction and nonfiction books, always aiming to bring science to life through humor and illustrations.
